Dating back to 1855, Hill House was commissioned by Robert Parnall, a local boy who made his fortune in London as a haberdasher. Parnall acquired the land and the rights to quarry the neighbouring stone — believed to have been used in the construction of the house in 1856. In the 1880s, he remodelled the property with the addition of elegant walk-in bay windows before passing it to his unmarried daughters. He later built a grand residence known as The Cottage on the beachfront below. The original estate also included the coach house and the white house at the bottom of the drive.
In the 20th century, Hill House was home to Norman Wilson, Chairman of Wedgwood Potteries, who added a generous kitchen extension in the 1970s. In later years, the ground-floor sitting room was thoughtfully converted into a bedroom for ease of access. Wilson’s legacy endures — his final resting place lies in the village churchyard.
In 2016, the owners added a bespoke yoga studio — a versatile space that lends itself to a home gym, artist’s studio, or garden room, depending on lifestyle and ambition.
