The pole's story is one of gratitude. Alsford's younger brother, Roger, had travelled to Canada to seek his fortune but fell on hard times. He was rescued from starvation by the people of a Kwakiutl First Nations village on Vancouver Island. In an act of profound thanks, John Alsford commissioned the renowned Kwakiutl artist Henry Hunt to carve the pole. Standing at nine metres tall, the pole is one of only a few in the UK and serves as a powerful reminder of Berkhamsted's historical trade links with Canada and the generosity of the Kwakiutl people.
