Conon Bridge is a village in the Highlands of Scotland, lying at the head of the Cromarty Firth where the River Conon narrows and is crossed by the bridge that gave the settlement its name. The crossing point has long been of strategic importance, serving as a link between Ross-shire and the routes leading south towards Inverness, the Highland capital.

The origins of Conon Bridge can be traced to the 19th century, when the building of a stone bridge in 1809 created a natural focus for settlement and trade. The arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century further strengthened its role as a transport hub, connecting local agricultural communities to wider markets. Prior to this, the area was largely rural, with farming and fishing dominating village life.

Only a short distance to the north-east lies the historic market town of Dingwall, once the administrative centre of Ross-shire and a place of medieval importance. Dingwall flourished due to its Norse connections, its royal burgh status, and its lively cattle markets, which drew people from across the Highlands. Conon Bridge, though smaller, benefitted from this proximity, acting as a crossing and a stopping place for those travelling to and from Dingwall.

To the south, some 12 miles away, stands Inverness, the Highland capital. For centuries, Inverness has been the focal point for commerce, governance, and culture in the region. The road and rail links through Conon Bridge made it part of the wider corridor between Dingwall and Inverness, ensuring its continued significance even as transportation and settlement patterns modernised.

Today, while retaining its village character, Conon Bridge stands as a reminder of the importance of crossings and communication routes in Highland history — a place that grew from its bridge and flourished through its connections to Dingwall’s market heritage and the urban life of Inverness.
