The village is steeped in history and as mentioned above, has the fully restored Weavers Cottage at its centre, which, when entered, one is transported back to a time when Kilbarchan was at the very heart of the Scottish textile industry.
The area is well served by local state primary and secondary schools and Kilmacolm village (6 miles) has the independent St Columba’s with its enviable record of academic achievement. Glasgow has further independent schooling.
Kilbarchan has a mid-sized and well stocked Greens food store, a Morrisons supermarket is about 2 miles, a large Asda superstore 4 miles and the latest Tesco centre is at Linwood about 4 miles away. The Braehead & Silverburn retail villages are around 10 & 13 miles where there are a tremendous range of High Street multiples together with Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s anchor stores. Braehead also has an IKEA furniture superstore. The city at 15 miles has all the cultural, higher educational and leisure services normally associated with a major international centre.
As with most parts of central Scotland one is never too far from a golf course and Gladstone Farm is no exception: Johnstone has Cochrane Castle golf club and at nearby Bridge of Weir there are two fine courses, Old Ranfurly & Ranfurly Castle, all of which are popular and challenging 18-hole parkland golf courses.
The River Cart runs between Kilbarchan & Johnstone, and it is possible by permit, to fish for brown trout, coarse fish, recent river improvements have seen salmon returning to the Cart.
Castle Semple loch offers inland sailing, and the Firth of Clyde has excellent chandlery and marina services as well as some of the UK’s most scenic and enjoyable coastal sailing.
The area has a regular bus service to Glasgow and there is a main line rail station at Milliken Park which is only about 1.5 miles from the house. Glasgow Airport is only 6.5 miles and offers domestic and international flights. The A737 on and off spur are at Kilbarchan which subsequently lead to the M8 motorway corridor which provides fast motor car access to central Scotland and beyond"
