The impressive Birch House is an elegant building in Bridge Street on the corner of Waterloo Street West and has had a varied history. It has in many ways contributed to the life of Macclesfield. The date of construction is unknown but the first reference comes in the 1841 Census. Part of the building was occupied by Thomas Brodrick, a silk manufacturer and a man with some power in the area. One half of the Birch House building was a girls boarding school the school remained until 1893 when it was sold, we believe, as a Private residence. In 1909 the property was again sold or leased to members of the socialist movement in Macclesfield. In 1929 the name of the building was changed to the William Pimblott Memorial Hall after the man who had founded the political labour movement in Macclesfield in the 1893. It remained in William’s hands until after the second world war. Since then it has served a variety of functions. Such is the standard of the recent conversion, Birch House has now been nominated for an award in the North West LABC awards 2020, under the category as best use of an existing building.
