Climping is known for its two miles of beach stretching alongside unspoilt farmland with walks by the sea or the river and inland towards The Downs.
The Hamlet of Atherington, now disappeared through the ravages of the sea, was a Saxon settlement. After the Norman Conquest, the manor of Atherington was given to the Abbey of Seez in Normandy. The abbey sent over a monk to act as bailiff, hence the name Bailiffscourt. The 12th century chapel of the bailiff still stands and the modern Bailiffscourt is now a gym and spa.
