The connectivity here is among the best in the UK with access to Farringdon, the hub for the Elizabeth Line, and to all of London’s airports with ease. It is within walking distance to London’s key rail hubs, King’s Cross, St Pancras (for Eurostar) and Euston, as well as mainline stations including Blackfriars and Farringdon, and to all areas including Bankside, the South Bank, Soho, Bloomsbury and Covent Garden. FOR REF SEE
Clerkenwell itself is at the centre of the capital's culinary and creative scenes, with cosy pubs, cool cafes, lively bars and some of the city's best restaurants. Exmouth Market, which has a wonderful lunchtime food market, is also on the doorstep, and the area is well served by a fashionable variety of boutique shops, eateries and pubs. It truly is the ideal location for immersion into the vibrancy and history of Central London.
The house has a fascinating history that is linked to the construction of the Metropolitan Railway in 1860–8 — the first underground train line in the world. This massive infrastructure project demolished earlier buildings and left space for development, and the brick-built terrace in which this property sits was built in 1874–5 by Walter William Wheeler, a well-known builder from Notting Hill, as a mix of houses and shops. He used a bay-fronted style with triple-aspect windows and high ceilings, maximising the light within the house. At this, the central house, he gave the parapet a decorative element as if to emphasise its centrality. The black railings are also of great historical interest.
The terrace in which the house sits originally comprised 114–152 Farringdon Road, but 142–152 were damaged in WWII and demolished. The rest have survived well.
The terrace is now in a fantastic position in a revived Clerkenwell, and is such an integral part of the Rosebery Avenue Conservation Area that a photograph of it appears on the local authority literature. Close to the phenomenally successful Exmouth Market, it sits opposite the Mount Pleasant development, which is already inhabited and also breathing new life into the area.
