I was initially drawn to the area by a friend who lived on the same street and knew it to be a peacefulness and convenient location. When I first viewed the flat, I loved how quiet it was, the private entrance, and high ceilings. These qualities have made for a wonderful ten-year stay.
The sense of community here is truly special. During the pandemic, a neighborhood WhatsApp group formed, bringing us all closer. We've become friends with our neighbours, taking in parcels, lending a hand, and even enjoying the occasional pub outing.
The location is unbeatable. Just a few minutes' walk away are bus stops connecting to Elephant & Castle, London Bridge, New Cross and Peckham Rye, with Denmark Hill a short walk away. The latter offers easy access to the countryside, perfect for weekend getaways, or long walk and Sunday roast in a country pub, something we do nearly weekly.
Burgess Park is our go-to spot for daily dog walks with Bagheera, our Irish Doodle. Whether it's watching the sunset from the hilltop in summer or watching the sunrise over the lake in winter, the park offers year-round beauty, and variety. Stomping Ground provides excellent coffee, and there are plenty of quiet corners for reading or relaxing. The nearby Peckham Rye and Ruskin Park offer different running routes to change things up, and we regularly run to, and in, both.
Being situated between Camberwell and Peckham Rye, we have a wealth of culinary delights on our doorstep. From the Indian takeaway on Southampton Way (which we love) to Toad Bakery and Mondo Sandwiches, there's is plenty close at hand. There is also a Tesco two minutes away which is handy for any last-minute bits and pieces. Camberwell boasts some great pubs, wine bars, and a variety of eateries, including Silkroad, Stormbird, Momo Sushi and Foreza Win to name a few. The weekly farmers market is a favourite as well. Peckham offers a bit more buzz with options like Brick Brewery, the White Horse, and Mr Bao. Bellenden Road is home to three distinctive pubs, a great butcher, inviting cafes and a real village feel. We're also close to Walworth Road, with gems like Saint Louis, where we head for exceptional toasties and coffee, and Elephant Castle which has a growing food scene.
The quietness of the flat is one of its greatest asset. Once the door is closed, the London noise fades away, offering a peaceful retreat.
