So, what is Marmalade Lane?
Cohousing communities are intentional communities, created and fully run by the residents. Each household has a self-contained, private home as well as shared community space. Residents come together to manage their community, share activities, and socialise together. Cohousing is a way of resolving the isolation many people experience today, recreating the neighbourly support of the past. Cohousing communities aim to live together sustainably.
Marmalade community and how does it work?
Formed in 2019, with a combination of 42 houses and apartments, and around 90 multi-generational and diverse members (adults and children) who have chosen to live in a more neighbourly way. Every household is required to have one director of Cambridge Cohousing Ltd and be an active member, by supporting monthly community workdays, attending community meetings, and actively taking part in working groups. The residents volunteer to take on tasks as part of living in the community.
Facilities maintained by the community, available for personal and community use
The common house, is the central hub of the community. It has a well-equipped kitchen in which working groups provide some meals and a large social dining table. A spacious comfy seating area, where meetings and social gatherings take place and even a children’s playroom. There is also a separate adult-only sitting room, where friends can meet up and relax, read, or listen to music. All areas are available to the community or for personal usage and are seen as part of an extension of your own home. There is a service charge of approximately £80 per month, that pays the costs of the communal areas and maintains the resources available.
The community garden, is a large green space with social seating, a play area with a slide, a mud kitchen, and a trampoline. The kitchen garden provides fruit and vegetables for the community meals, a community compost, and a wildflower meadow. There are even residents’ chickens and hedgehog visitors.
Three guest bedrooms, situated in the Common house and available for family and friends to use at £7.00 a night, with the rooms being cleaned and prepared by the hosts.
Home working study, is ideal for home workers or students, who wish to get out of the home whilst working, which has three work desk stations, internet, and is free of charge.
A workshop and pottery room, give the community access to a range of tools, to be used for general maintenance and home projects and workshop space, to be able to maintain bikes for example. The workshop also has two pottery wheels and a kiln, for the novice to learn or keen potter to use.
Community shop, a not-for-profit membership-based community shop, items are bulk purchased from Infinity Foods.
A laundry room, with four washing machines and a dryer, is available to everyone in the community with a small fee of 85p per wash.
A gym, no charge for use, and Sauna £1 per use.
High-speed broadband connection, access to a community-run site, this service can replace the need for a commercial internet service provider, approx. £9.00 per month.
Plenty is going on, with a wide variety of social and other activities. You can find out more about life at Marmalade Lane by looking at Marmalade Lane's Facebook page.
