Floor Plans

Description

This former stable on Darrell Road in East Dulwich has been artfully converted into a three-bedroom house. Light pours into the expansive ground-floor living areas from a series of courtyards and windows, while double-height, vaulted ceilings emphasise its voluminous proportions. At the rear, a wooden door leads to a private walled garden.

The Tour

Darrell Road is a quiet residential street minutes from East Dulwich Village and Lordship Lane. Once a stable building where the milkman kept his horses, the building has been transformed into a colourful, coherent and serene home. Entry is to a porch, where newly installed Crittall-style doors lead through to the open-plan kitchen area.

A recently fitted copper-topped island sits alongside white kitchen cabinets offset by a green-tiled splashback. The eye is drawn through the ground floor and out towards the large, double-height ceiling living space and courtyards. Exposed wood ceilings run throughout, culminating in a lofty mono-pitch at the rear. There is a large open fireplace set between two generous windows that look onto a second courtyard behind the living room. Tucked beneath the stairs is a WC decorated in House of Hackney wallpaper. Standing golden radiators echo materials used throughout the house.

The first floor has been reconfigured with a new central staircase and balcony that unify the space, with a dramatic Lee Broom chandelier overhead. Wooden floors run underfoot, guiding towards the voluminous principal bedroom with its striking vaulted ceiling and built-in storage. Skylights and a Juliet balcony draw in plenty of light.

A roomy bathroom sits adjacent and is finished with green tiles that reference the house's wider colour palette. A second bedroom sits at the back of the house overlooking the garden, and next to a bright shower room with a large skylight above. The third bedroom on the ground floor also has a mezzanine floor for additional storage space.

Outside Space

Crittall-style doors lead through to two special garden areas. At the rear of the house, a white-walled patio area is the ideal suntrap for the ivy climber and plenty of pots and planters. Behind this, an original arched wooden door flows through to the garden, which has a wonderful sense of privacy and calm.

An internal courtyard provides a lovely spot for morning coffee.

The Area

Darrell Road is perfectly positioned for the broad selection of cafés, bars and restaurants in both Peckham and Dulwich Village. Lordship Lane is home to a vast number of independent shops including Mons Cheesemongers, Moxon's fishmongers, Franklins Farm Shop, and a newly-opened deli, Jones of Brockley. The East Dulwich Picturehouse is a two-minute walk away. The green spaces of Peckham Rye Park and Dulwich Park are within easy reach, while nearby Dulwich Leisure Centre has a public swimming pool and gym.

There are also many highly regarded state and private schools in the area, including Horniman Primary School and Fairlawn Primary School which both received a “Good” rating from Ofsted. Harris Boy’s Academy East Dulwich and Harris Girl’s Academy East Dulwich are only a 20-minute walk from the house and both achieved an “Outstanding” Ofsted report.

The nearest stations are Peckham Rye, Forest Hill and East Dulwich which run Southern Rail services and London Overground services citywide. Trains to London Bridge take approximately thirteen minutes. There are also excellent bus connections.
